Healthy Homemade Snack Alternatives

The epidemic of children in America being overweight is dreadful. The numbers are as big as the children. Look around and you will not find it hard to believe that now 1 in 3 children are overweight.

It is so easy to grab a bag of chips or a candy bar hurrying out the door. Quick foods do not have to be avoided all the time, it is just they should be eaten sparingly. There are many better options.

There are Plenty of Fast, Homemade Alternatives to Fatty Snacks

People have more food options today in Western Civilization than they have ever had. A walk down the many aisles of the supermarket is proof enough. It is almost impossible to get out of the grocery store in under an hour with so many options to choose from.

This means there is a lot of possibility to create some new and tasty treats. With the school year just kicking off, why not spend a little time experimenting with some snack recipes? Find some good ones and get sorted for the year. It will save you time in the long run. Just a half an hour a week or so, depending on the size of your family and how much they snack, could make a difference in the future of your children.

Here are some tasty, trendy and easy recipes:

Hummus

Hummus is made with the garbanzo bean as its base. The garbanzo is very nutritious and has a distinctive, earthy taste. Once you make the base, you can add a variety of different things to spice it up.

For every one cup of garbanzo beans you blend, add 2 teaspoons lemon juice, a small glove of garlic and 1 tablespoon of tahini. Tahini is basically smashed sesame seeds. As a substitute, you may add standard sesame seeds instead. Add 2 teaspoons of oil and a pinch of salt. Add a bit of water until it is your desired consistency.

Once you have the base made experiment by adding paprika, basil, crushed tomatoes or red peppers, sliced olives. Use hummus as a spread over crackers or bread, as a sauce in pitas or salads. It is so delicious and rich.
